A TYPICAL DAY AT CHKA KIDS KENPO CAMP
A typical day at Kids Kenpo Camp begins promptly at 10 am with a Kenpo Karate class led by one of CHKA’s academy-trained instructors.
After the 45 minute class, the kids change into their street clothes or bathing suits, depending on the weather, and head out with our staff of counselors and CIT’s to a nearby park or playground for outdoor time which may include sports instruction, group activities and games, or sprinkler play, followed by picnic lunch. Children bring their own lunch from home.
Outdoor time typically lasts 90 minutes – 2 hours, depending on the activity. Once per week, the kids will go on a local field trip. Past field trips have included outdoor music, dance and interactive storytelling performances, library, theater, local gardens, fishing and more.
After lunch, the kids return to our air-conditioned studio for a specialty class in the afternoon. The wide range of classes has included Tumbling with our own Rokudan Shihan Andre Valdez, formerly of the Big Apple Circus, Music Instruction with David Cutler, a CHKA member and internationally recognized Soul and Funk musician, Drama, Organic Gardening, Mandarin Chinese, and a variety of Kenpo specialty classes such as Nunchaku, Forms, Sparring and more.
At the end of the day, the kids relax for snack time and conversation before pickup at 3 pm. We provide juice and healthy snacks for the campers. On rainy days, martial arts films and videos are viewed in our comfortable office area.
The final week of each 4-week session is a preparation for a presentation for the families and certification ceremony, and the final week of the summer is Kenpo Olympics week, where every camper receives a medal for their accomplishments, and teamwork is celebrated.
In addition to the physical activities we provide, Kids Kenpo campers learn important martial arts values such as hard work, independence, responsibility, loyalty, consideration, teamwork and friendship. Our adult camp staff, aside from being CHKA academy-trained instructors, also have teaching and childcare experience, and include a New York Public School Assistant Principal.
We would be happy to have you visit our school and attend a free class as well. The group class schedule is online at www.chka.org
