The
martial arts have been portrayed through history as
mystical, but in fact there is nothing magic about it.
The martial arts are a combination of art and physical
skills developed through discipline and hard work by
dedicated practitioners. Students who begin to study the
martial arts with an open mind and a serious attitude can
expect to develop power and strength they have always
possessed but never realized.
A Short History of Kenpo
Kenpo is a mixture of five cultures:
Chinese, Japanese Okinawan, Hawaiian (before Hawaii
became a U.S. state) and American. It was passed down
through the Mitose family, who studied the original
art in China in the 1600s and brought it back to
Japan. From there, it was taken to Hawaii, where Ed
Parker studied it and brought it back to mainland
United States in 1954. Ed Parker described Kenpo in
this way:
"Kenpo employs linear as
well as circular moves, utilizing intermittent
power when and where needed, interspersed with
minor and major moves which flow with continuity.
It is flexible in thought and action so as to
blend with encounters as they occur."
| Shamburger's Chinese Hawaiian Kenpo
System is a unique blend of the old and
the new. The art is based on many of the
traditional disciplines from China and Japan but
adapted to reflect the realities of the modern
world. Teaching focuses on positive values and
encourages all students to develop themselves
mentally, physically, and spiritually. As a
fighting system, Kenpo is geared toward self-defense,
and since physical strength is not important, it
is an ideal system for men, women, and children
of all ages. |
| Adults: You are never too
old to begin the study of the martial arts. In
fact, if you are thinking about getting in shape,
what better way to do so than while learning self-defense
techniques that could save your life? One hour
group classes for beginners through advanced
students are designed to develop the physical
conditioning, basic fighting skills, and self-defense
techniques necessary for students to progress to
the black belt level. |
| Women: You'll never want to
take another aerobics class once you've tried a
CHKA group class! The cardiovascular benefits and
strength conditioning involved with Kenpo
training will ensure noticeable changes in your
body, whether your goal is to lose weight or just
tone up. Kenpo is an ideal self-defense system
for women since the movements used do not require
strenght, but skill, speed and technique. Kenpo's
emphasis on street self-defense enables women to
build the self-confidence many lack in the
increasingly violent world we are faced with
today. |
| Children: Our Children's Program provides a
wonderful opportunity for children ages 3 and up to participate
in an activity that is both educational and fun. Classes are
tailored to your child's appropriate developmental level,
fostering both physical and mental growth. Classes focus on
increasing: self esteem; self confidence; self discipline; self
control; motivation; coordination; focus & attention;
socialization skills; and leadership skills. We offer a very
flexible schedule, allowing your child to attend classes in a
way that is compatible with your family's busy life. Classes are
taught by certified Kenpo instructors. |
| Kickboxing: Everbody can
join our Kickboxing class regardless of belt
level. We also have a program for those who want
only Kickboxing. |
| Private Instruction: A
special aspect of our Kenpo system is the
individual instruction that complements your
regular training. You will receive one to six 30-minute
private lessons a month, depending on your
program. These private lessons are individually
tailored to provide students with the instruction
necessary to help them advance in their program. |
